With a career that intersects mental health, entertainment, arts and cuisine, Ambassador Barbara Demming Lurie is not afraid to change lanes.

The Luminaries, a support organization for Torrance Memorial Medical Center, introduced the Links of Love initiative during Holiday Festival 2017. The group invited festival attendees to make a contribution personalized with a handwritten message. Messages were then delivered to hospital patients and also included in a paper link chain that decorated various units to spread holiday cheer.

Torrance Memorial Medical Center is committed to providing the families and community of the South Bay with the most advanced care available. According to Dr. John McNamara, chief medical officer, the medical center is continually looking for ways to improve patient outcomes, and technology is an integral part of that effort.

What is the Alzheimer’s epidemic?

It’s hard to believe, but every 66 seconds someone in the United States develops the disease. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. More than 5 million Americans are presently living with the disease, and that number is expected to climb to 16 million by 2050 with our aging population.

How does Alzheimer’s affect someone?

Judy Maizlish recalls that her parents always prioritized community involvement and giving to others, even when funds were limited. "Giving is in my blood," she says. Though she's past retirement age, Maizlish remains willing to give her time to a job she loves. She serves as executive director at Independence Center, a small, nonprofit residential program in Los Angeles for people with social and learning disabilities.

What a difference a year makes. February 1 marked the one-year anniversary of a strategic alliance between Torrance Memorial and Cedars-Sinai. The two organizations joined forces with very big goals to create new opportunities to enhance medical care in the South Bay.

Since 2016 the cardiac specialists from Torrance Memorial and Cedars-Sinai have been working together to bring outstanding cardiovascular care to the residents of the South Bay community.

In November 2012 Stephanie Bezner, an attorney and lifelong resident of the South Bay, was feeling excitement surrounding the impending arrival of her first child with husband Brian. Stephanie and Brian had toured Torrance Memorial Medical Center’s labor and delivery unit as well as the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and had selected the hospital as the location of their child’s birth.
