Expanding Emergency Care

When Minutes Count, Count on Us

Expanding Emergency Care

Torrance Memorial Medical Center is expanding its Emergency Department to better serve the community’s healthcare needs. This project will increase patient capacity, reduce wait times, and improve the overall patient experience by integrating the latest medical technologies and creating additional private treatment rooms. The expansion aims to ensure that our Emergency Department remains a state-of-the-art facility capable of delivering critical care efficiently, especially as patient volumes grow.

The expanded emergency care facility, which is expected to open in 2026, will feature:

  • More than 80 treatment spaces—double the department’s current capacity
  • An open-concept design, including spaces that can be used for multiple purposes or modified depending on staff and patient needs
  • Rooms with glass partitions for enhanced viewing, safety, security and privacy
  • Enhanced technology to improve efficiency and safety

Project Timeline

  • Project Kickoff: Groundbreaking Ceremony – September 24, 2024. Click here to see photos from event.
  • First Floor Triage: Starting November 2024, we begin work at the front entrance of the Emergency Department to build a new temporary triage area. This temporary triage space will allow us to continue providing seamless patient care while we replace our existing triage area with a modern, more efficient space designed to improve patient flow and comfort.
Expected Completion: Temporary triage will be completed around April 2025; permanent triage area will be completed around January 2026.
  • Second Floor Demo: Starting November 2024, we begin demolition of the second floor of the Emergency Department. This phase involves important preparation work, including "safe-ing off" the electrical conduit and nurse call systems before the more intensive demolition work begins.
Expected Completion: This initial work is expected to take about a month, leading into the hard demolition phase in December.
